In a memorandum submitted to the Public Service Department (PSD), NUTP has expressed its dissatisfaction and called on the PSD to abolish the recently introduced evaluation examination to determine salary increments and promotions for teachers and other employees in the public and civil services.
From the very start, the written evaluation examination created controvery, disappointment and anger amongst those who sat for the exam because of the irrelevance of the questions set to the work done, the mode of awarding marks and the maximum marks needed to qualify as having passed the exam.
The various flaws in the exam and its unsuitability to be used as a yardstick to award salary increments and promotions have been made known to the PSD and the Ministry of Education by NUTP and the National Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (CUEPACS).
The existing examination will not be able to assess the key aspects of a civil servant's competency like knowledge and skill needed in his/her line of work.
To date neither the PSD or the Goverment has made a decision on the appeal. NUTP and CUEPACS are waiting for their response before planning the next move. We hope to have the matter settled amicably.
